Ghost:
How to play
ربع قرد ("a quarter of a monkey") is the circle game Egyptians play with country names, letter by letter. Ghost is the classic English word game. On this site, the phone is the referee for both.
ربع قرد: countries, in Arabic
Sit in a circle. The first player says a letter, the next adds a letter to the end, and so on around the circle. Every letter has to keep the letters on their way to the name of a country, spelled in Arabic.
Example: م, then ص, then ر spells مصر (Egypt). Whoever completes a country's name takes a quarter of a monkey 🐒. Four quarters make a whole monkey, and that player is out. The last player left wins. (If your house rules differ, change them before you start.)
Think the player before you is bluffing? Tap تحدّي (Challenge) and ask «الدولة إيه؟», "Which country?" If they name a real country, the challenger takes the quarter; if not, the bluffer does.
No letter to add? Tap معنديش حرف ("I have no letter") and take the quarter. Running out of time costs the quarter too.
No repeats: a country said once can't be said again in that game. The player after the one who took the quarter starts the next round.
Referee notes
- ال at the start of a name doesn't count: الجزائر is جزائر, الهند is هند.
- أ, إ and آ count as ا, ة as ه, and ى as ي. ج can stand for غ: جانا is غانا (Ghana).
- The shortest name ends the round: مالي (Mali) ends it before ماليزيا (Malaysia), which opens up once مالي has been played.
- The strict referee (صارم) refuses a letter that no country can follow. With bluffing allowed (مفتوح), any letter goes and only a challenge catches it.
- Before the game, choose who takes the quarter (whoever completes the name, or the next player) and the time per turn: 10, 20 or 30 seconds, or no clock (except online).
Ghost: words or countries, in English
Take turns adding one letter to the end of a growing word. Every letter has to keep the letters on their way to a real word (or a country, if you play Countries), but you don't want to be the one who finishes it.
Whoever completes a word takes a letter of GHOST 👻: a G the first time, then an H, an O, an S and a T. Spell all of G-H-O-S-T and you're out. The last player who isn't a ghost wins.
Example: the letters so far are A-P-P-L. Adding E spells APPLE and Y spells APPLY, so either one costs a letter. A (towards APPLAUD) or I (towards APPLICATION) keeps the game going.
Think the player before you is bluffing? Tap Challenge. They have to name a word that starts with the letters so far. If they can, the challenger takes the letter; if they can't, or admit they were bluffing, they take it.
Can't think of a safe letter? Tap I'm stuck and take the letter. Running out of time costs a letter too.
No repeats: once a word has been completed or named in a challenge, it can't be used again in that game. The player after the one who took the letter starts the next round.
Referee notes
- Words count from four letters: CAT doesn't end a round, but CATS does.
- The first word wins: GAME ends the round before anyone gets to GAMER.
- Plurals and other forms count (CATS, MAKING, BIGGER). Names, abbreviations and swear words don't.
- American and British spellings both count: COLOR and COLOUR.
- The strict referee refuses a letter that no word can follow. With bluffing allowed, any letter goes and only a challenge catches it.
- Countries accept the names people use: USA, UK, Ivory Coast, Czech Republic, Turkey.
- Before the game, choose who takes the letter for a completed word, and the time per turn: 10, 20 or 30 seconds, or no clock (except online).
Four ways to play
- Pass and play: 2 to 8 players pass one phone around the circle, and the phone referees.
- Play the computer: take on 1 to 4 computer players, easy, medium or hard.
- Play friends online: 2 to 6 players, each on their own phone, join a room with a 4-letter code or a WhatsApp link. No sign-up.
- English Ghost: the same three ways in English, at Ghost, with words or countries.
Once the page has loaded, one phone and the computer games keep working without a connection; online rooms need one.
The shop and bananas
Bananas 🍌 come from playing: a gift on your first visit and every day, and a few for each round and game you finish and each win. They buy looks in the shop: avatars, frames, backgrounds, letter skins, sound packs, music and win celebrations. Looks are only looks and never change the rules. If you like, you can also watch an ad to the end for extra bananas; that is always your choice.
